Emotional honesty and intelligent lyrics are the core of
Lindasusans music. Composed of rich harmonies, intricate percussion, and original chord
progressions, her songs look at the world head on and heart open. The eclectic, yet
integrated, mix of styles reflects a songwriter whose path has taken her through degrees
in nuclear fusion and Shakespeare, to sustained commitments to community activism and
shamanic healing work.
I see the different aspects of my life as reflections
of a single core, says Lindasusan. The passion I bring to a performance is the
same energy I bring to my writing, to healing work, and even to organizing for social
justice. Its all about feeling the connections between people, and about the compassion
that this understanding engenders. The hard part is just getting out of the way and
letting it come through.
In keeping with her versatility, Lindasusan remembers not
take herself too seriously and her wit and humor come through on stage.
Ive always said that the show should be fun for everyone involved. If Im having
a good time, so will the audience. At least, thats my story and Im sticking to it.
Lindasusan and the Total Babes began in 1995, when Lindasusan
recruited three fellow singers in the prestigious UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus to join her
for a show in San Francisco. The band played many clubs around the Bay
Area, including the Hotel Utah, CoCo Club, Bazaar Cafe, and Last Day Saloon. Other performance highlights include “Liquid Fire: Skin Hot - Bone Deep”,
the Women Everywhere Have a Voice benefit, the Bi and For the People gala, the 1998 International Bisexual
Conference, and the main stage of San Franciscos LGBT Pride Celebration.
These days, Lindasusan is shifting her focus to solo performances, while building community through writing songs, creating haiku, curating a concert series, working on a humorous book about getting married, and still finding time to play in a rock n' roll band. Her style continues to evolve, reflecting her ongoing synthesis of different genres.
With her skills as an artist deepening, Lindasusans love of music and words keeps growing. When I think about other performers whose work has moved me profoundly, I think, Yes thats how I want to spend my life.
