Guidelines

You draw a line in the sand
Say, “There – it’s fixed in stone”
But when I look I only see
Stones that wore down long ago
All it would take is one good wave
To make the fiction disappear
Then there’d be nothing in the way
To keep us from drawing near

We’re on the same page of a book
Each of us enjoying it well
But when I read you a passage aloud
You cover your ears, say I shouldn’t tell
It’s not like I’m giving away the end
Just want to share the moment
Watch a smile ignite your eyes
As your cover opens

Nothing’s fixed in this world
We never know what comes next
Every word means different things
Each case encased by context
Loosen the guidelines that bind you
Break a rule when the time is right
Let me in at the garden wall
Let yourself take flight
