The Urban Renewal Haiku Project

I began the Urban Renewal Haiku Project as a response to the changing nature of the Mission District, my neighborhood in San Francisco. I’ve lived in the same flat nearly 10 years, and have watched the area endure garbage, gentrification, drug dealing, and violence. I’ve also seen it teem with artists, low-income families, housing rights activists, and sunshine. I wanted to bring out the poetry inherent in this dynamic place, and post it for everyone to see.

Every week (give or take in the rainy season), I'd put up a set of four poems, each with an accompanying graphic. These blue half-sheets of paper are now easily recognizable. This project of the Haiku Hut has 48 haiku in all.
