No Unalloyed Joy

One person’s found is someone else’s lost
What are the dividends? What is the cost?
Seems that fate cuts as fortune turns
The fire that warms is the fire that burns

Seems there’s no unalloyed joy

I reached deep inside her and she within me
But we crossed a line we didn’t know to see
Two steps forward, two steps back
High stakes this time if we land upon a crack

Seems there’s no unalloyed joy

I know life’s not easy
I learned that right away
And I’m not ungrateful
For the gifts with which I play
But it seems each blessing comes with pain

At the moment long awaited
Even better than anticipated
Forced to make a deep sacrifice
Why must happiness have grief as a price?

Seems there’s no unalloyed joy
