The Only Thing I Own

Berlin was divided by a wall
The Brandenburg Gate was a portal to nowhere
Heavy with guards, no one got through
The no-man’s-land
Then the wall fell and the gate opened up
Suddenly I could walk where I wanted
Turn left, turn right, straight ahead
It was in my hands

Chorus:
I learned that my time is the only thing I own
How I spend it is the story of my life
Freedom expands beyond the edges of the universe
Frightening but divine

Not moving on the path I knew I should
Demoralized, despairing, or distracted
Easier to hide behind surviving
In the day to day
I looked to the things that I held the dearest
That I’d say I couldn’t live without
Their notable absence signalled a need
For a new way

chorus

Love increases as you give it freely
Time’s the precious resource
Compassion comes back a thousandfold
But a moment gone has no recourse

Will I worry about what may come tomorrow?
Will I pretend there was no yesterday?
The choices I make prepare the outcome
Like thoughts before sleep
I guide my thread through the loom we all tread
I can’t go back – I can only shift direction
Turn left, turn right, straight ahead
It’s up to me

chorus
