Still Life With Sunflowers
Inspired by the letters of Vincent van Gogh

Hey there, my friend, do you hear what I’m saying?
I’ve been reading all about you and your illustrious career
And maybe I’m crazy as I lie here in darkness
But I can’t help feeling that somehow you’re near
Are you the brother I’ve searched for so long?
Are your paintings a sign?
A hand extended to greet the future
Would you clasp mine?
So much of what you’d hoped for’s now true
Is that a surprise?
You knew you were sacrificing everything
Your health, your mind

Chorus:
I want to tell you so many things
Sitting side by side
I want you to sing through my voice
I want to see with your eyes
I ride your canvas places
I never knew I needed to go
The brush stroke is your song
And the color is your soul

Walk up the hill with me in the long autumn sunshine
Stare across the plain with me in the dying of the light
You’ll help silence the cacophony
So I hear the voices inside
I’ll hold your head and smooth your eyes
When they betray your sight
Neither you nor I had the comfort
Of illusions on our side
We’d find the truth even if it meant
Tearing out our minds

chorus

The future only promised you exile above all
I often wonder if I, too, will hear that clarion call
I understand the madness far too well
Perhaps I’m madder than I know
To think I sense you here at all
Though its reality won’t let go
But if I learn anything from you
If I take your words to heart
I won’t be exiled from myself
Won’t shatter myself apart
The lucidity in the moments between
The awareness of your state
Make it hard to accept that all was lost
I can’t accept that all is lost

I’m searching for memories of your pictures
The consolation you sought
Each one is like a friend who delivers me
From loneliness when I’m caught
You’re not forgotten here
By your companion in fate
I warm myself by your fire now
I hope I didn’t come too late
I’ll see the sun with you
Hold it in my hand
I’ll hold a thought for you
Wherever each grain lands

chorus
